120 Don'ts Description
For my thesis, I made a list of 120 personal restrictions that I organized into four categories. The four categories are Obligations, Personal Appearance, Personal Preferences, and Personality traits that are represented through the subtle off white colored paper variations. The installation was inspired by the quantity of restrictions I generated. These are things that I think about for the most part on a daily basis. Having 120 of them seemed to be almost overwhelming so I wanted my installation to convey the same feeling. I decided to use flyers because then each restriction or rule could have its own space and each could exist together but separately. I wanted to make use of a corner space so I could create an environment with the flyers. Even while making my list, I discovered that there were quite a few that I tended to break (some fairly often). This list of rules was very personal for me and I thought that tracking the rules that I would break on a daily basis added to the content of my thesis. Because breaking some of the rules are just as important to display as the rules that I never have and never will break. The "Broken" stamp became a marker to tally the rules and restrictions that I have broken over the time that I started installing the piece and will continue to keep track until the closing of the show. I will be taking pictures of my installation during the duration of the show to display the changes and stamping that I have been adding to it and posting it here!
